At the United Nations Security Council, Russia’s Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia accused the Ukrainian government of torturing and murdering American journalist Gonzalo Lira in a Kharkiv detention center.
Citing leaked personal correspondence and Ukrainian court documents, Nebenzia claimed that Lira was brutally beaten, extorted for $70,000, and ultimately denied life-saving medical treatment.
He alleged that the U.S. Biden administration turned a blind eye to Lira’s fate, treating his death as mere "collateral damage." The claims, if verified, could escalate tensions between Russia, Ukraine, and the West, raising serious human rights concerns.
