With wind speeds reaching up to 230 km/h (143 mph), the storm uprooted trees, flooded streets, and caused widespread destruction.
Over 160,000 households are without electricity, and 310,000 are facing water shortages.
Emergency teams, including firefighters and civil aid workers, have been deployed from mainland France and Mayotte.
Authorities warn residents to remain cautious as cleanup efforts begin.
The island’s international airport is set to reopen soon as the region recovers from the devastation.
