New findings in Gene Hackman's final autopsy consistent with prolonged fasting.

More than two months after Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead in their New Mexico home, final details of the actor's cause of death have officially been revealed.

While Arakawa's death was the result of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, autopsies for Hackman revealed that he had tested negative for the illness and had instead passed away due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

According to the medical investigator, Hackman's toxicology test also showed acetone levels at 5.3 mg/dl in his blood, while normal levels are typically up to 0.3 mg/dL.

These levels are reportedly consistent with prolonged fasting.

At the time of his death, Hackman had also been suffering from advanced stage Alzheimer's disease, with Arakawa serving as his primary caregiver.

While an exact timeline on the couple's passing remains unknown, it is believed that Arakawa passed away one week prior to her husband's death.
