Stock market today: Asia shares mostly rise while some regional markets stay closed for holidays

Asian shares are mixed in muted trading after the U.S. Federal Reserve opted not to cut interest rates for the first time since it began trying to help the economy through lower rates in September. Benchmarks in Japan and Australia rose Thursday. Most Asia-Pacific markets remained closed for the Lunar New Year holiday. Investors remain uncertain over the outlook for the U.S. economy and over what's ahead from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 fell 0.5% and the Dow dipped 0.3%. The Nasdaq fell 0.5%. Markets calmed following sell-offs spurred by news that Chinese upstart DeepSeek developed a large-language model able to compete with the world’s best AI without using top-flight chips.
