Law enforcement in the Starkville area set up tables at local grocery stores to collect old prescription drugs from community members.

Starkville police department partnered with the oktibbeha county sheriff's office to remove one possible danger from peoples homes..

Earlier today, officers and deputies set up tables outside three starkville stores to provide a safe place for residents to dispose of old prescription pills.

The program works to remove expired or just unused medications from homes.

All you needed to do was go to the selected stores and drop the pills into the box... taking less than a minute.

Donte thomas is a sergeant at the starkville police department and also helped put the event together today.

He said by giving people this opportunity, he hopes to create a safer home environment for children.

"kids are susceptible to drug use and having the availability of old prescriptions that are not monitored as they should be laying in their cabinets creates a great risk for our community so we're doing our best to provide citizens with opportunities to protect our families and theirs."

If you missed today's event, sergeant thomas said both the sheriff's office and the police department have permanent drop boxes for old prescription pills in its lobby open year round.
