Doug High introduces us to the work of Paul Sawyer, an impressionist painter from Frankfort.
C1 3 renown artists.
A very impressive collection of his work continues to be admired and studied at the kentucky historical society.
Julie kemper: paul sawyer was an early american impressionist painter who was actually born in ohio, but moved here to frankfort, kentucky when he was just four years old.
Sawyer lived the early part of his adult life here in frankfort, kentucky.
But, he also trained in chicago and new york and really became known for his watercolor landscapes.sawyer really did work out in nature, that iconic image of an artist with an easel out there.
Later on, he got into photography a little bit, but he also considered that as working in nature because the photography was the art.
Julie kemper: now, out of the something like 3,000 pieces of art he created over his lifetime, almost all of them are landscapes.
Many people would say that sawyer is one of the most important influential artists from kentucky.
But i think more than anything, what people love about his art is that sense of a nostalgia.
They can recognize landscapes from their own childhood.
Julie kemper: the kentucky historical society holds one of the largest, if not the largest collection of sawyers in the world.
We're edging on 150 of them, i think, at this point.
They are, like his length of work, primarily landscapes.
We have some great oil paintings and also portraits as well.
The collection we have here at the kentucky historical society is wonderful for studying, for artists to look for inspiration from everyone, from professional artists, all the way down to our camp kids in the summer.
