Local family shares plan for celebrating Thanksgiving safely

“We have to do things, sacrifice and do whatever we need to do to get this thing under control,” Morris said.

Says the*safest way to celebrate thanksgiving is at home with the people you live with, as covid-19 cases skyrocket across the nation.

Kezi 9 news reporter kennedy dendy spoke to one family in our area today about their recipe for a safe and memorable holiday season.

Bebe: "we have to do things, sacrifice and do whatever we need to do to get this thing under control."

For bebe morris, her family of nine is made up of 4 different households.

Bebe: "usually, for thanksgiving we meet at my daughter's house."

They decided that this year will look different.

Nats: "i've put each family name at the top."

The families will put portions into a container either family style or individually packed.

"on thanksgiving day at 11:45 we're meeting at a huge parking lot, we're parking all of our cars six feet away from everyone and popping the tailgate.

Two people at a time will go to each car and take out the things that have their name on it.

Then they'll all go home to eat it."

Everyone will come back together in the afternoon*virtually to talk about it.

But the love and community isn't limited to family by blood.

Bridge: jason johnson has been friends with bebe's grandson for 11 years.

He says he's pretty much been adopted into the family for the holidays and says this year will still be special, even with a bit of a twist.

Johnson: "i'm definitely looking forward to the food and trying everybody's food.

I get to make a fruit salad.

Fenley: "she's very happy to cook and provide for the family."

They say we all have to do our part.

Johnson: "the people we love need to protect them."

Fenley: "enjoy the holiday even if it's going to be a lot different."

Bebe: "you're sacrificing this year but next year you'll be able to see them which is better than an empty chair."
