Public health officials worry about the spike in hospitalizations as cases continue to rise.

There have been 43 deaths.

20 people in the hospital.

There's been a spike in hospitalizations in lane county... tied to the rising number of cases.

And one county commissioners had some choice words about those rising cases and how the university oregon is contributing to that.

Kezi 9 news reporter emma withrow is live at the uo to explain.

Emma at today's county board meeting... jay bozievich started questioning the science and statistics behind these freezes and shut downs.

He basically said that shutting down restaurants and gyms in our community doesn't make sense when the majority of gatherings are coming from social gatherings.... some of which might involve keg stands bosievich said it great that these uo kids have very little symptoms but theye bringing those cases into the community and it unfair to businesses that are getting forced to shutdown.

He said we need to give these shutdowns more thought and not just declare these things to make it seem like wee doing something.

Jay bozievich, county commissioner: "i am not seeing data anywhere that our health and fitness industry is a leading source of transmission but i am seeing huge amounts of data that the university system is, but the difference is that the fitness and health industry folks are private, and the uo is all public employees.

I have a feeling that has a lot more to do with that decision" according to lane county public health just under 25 percent of cases in lane county are tied to the university of oregon whoever is causing the case spikes aside... bozievich said his biggest concern is the safety of long term care facilities.

So coming up at 6 we'll hear from an infectious disease doctor about the vaccine on the way to orwgon.
