Our top story tonight at 6: ogeechee riverkeeper and residents in the area, are fighting to stop a rock quarry coming to hancock county.
41nbc's lizbeth gutierrez has more.
Carla mayes has lived by the ogeechee river for sixteen years.
She says the rock quarry will negatively impact her farm animals and home.
Carla mayes (farmer) :" i really don't want my cows consuming sylica and dust, right now all of my cows are are healthy, they're fat, they're sassy."
A rock quarry is where rocks, sand and minerals are extracted from the earth.
The ogeechee riverkeeper and residents say they're not oppposed to development, but the quarry will cause damage to the water system and the animals.
Carla mayes (farmer) :"we live in harmony, we live with one in nature, the birds are happy, the bee's are happy, everybody is happy here, and if you'll just take a minute and listen you can hear the happiness.
According to ogeechee riverkeeper damon mulliss, the proposed quarry is adjacent to the ogeechee river.
He says the location poses a risk to the environment and communities near by.
Damon mullis (executive director&riverkeeper) :" with a quarry like this, there's lots of blasting, so we started getting concerned about the aquifer and all the citizens in the area, use the aquifer for drinking."
The quarry will impact one hundred and fifty people who live around the area.
