Dark clouds loomed over the area when rain started to pour and strong winds blew in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City on May 23.

Market-goer Mykel Asesor said: ‘It was really terrifying.

The wind sounded like a ghost crying.

It was so hot in the morning and the rain suddenly poured.’ The Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are at the start of their tropical monsoon rainy season.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
