The BSE Sensex fell 237 points to 58,338.93.
The Nifty 50 finished 54 points lower at 17,475 points.
The BSE Sensex opened more than 300 points higher, but markets reversed course in the second half of the day.
ITC, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, and State Bank of India were the top performers on the BSE Sensex.
Housing Development Finance Corporation, HDFC Bank, and Maruti Suzuki India were the top losers on the benchmark index.
The volatility index in India, the VIX, fell 2.05 percent to 17.79 points.
