Peru has declared a nationwide state of emergency for the next 90 days after there has been a huge spike in cases of a rare neurological disorder called the ‘Guillain-Barre syndrome’ .
So far, 182 cases of GBS have been recorded and four people have died in the country.
An epidemiological alert was issued on June 27 in the country to intensify prevention, surveillance and response action for the neurological disorder.
Back in 2019 too, Peru had to endure a similar problem following an outbreak of a bacterial infection called campylobacter.
In this video, we explain to you what is this disease, what are the symptoms and whether there are any treatments available for it.
The Guillain-Barré Syndrome ..or the GBS is a neurological disorder and an autoimmune disease.
.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder where the body's immune system — which normally protects it from infections and other foreign bodies — mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nerve cells.
More specifically, the myelin sheath — an insulating layer of fat and protein that surrounds the nerve cells — becomes inflamed.
