Hundreds of protesters stormed the main gates of the Swedish embassy in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad early today in response to the police in Stockholm reportedly granting another permission for burning of the Muslim holy book, the Quran.
The demonstrators waved flags and signs showing the influential Iraqi Shia religious and political leader Muqtada al-Sadr. This demonstration was called by supporters of Sadr to protest the second planned burning of a Quran in Sweden.
Videos posted on social media showed a large number of protesters inside the Swedish embassy’s perimeter as well as black smoke and fire coming from the building.
