In a recent development, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed strong opposition to Google's decision to rename the "Gulf of Mexico" as the "Gulf of America" on its Maps platform for U.S. users.
This change aligns with an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, which also included reverting Denali's name back to Mount McKinley.
President Sheinbaum criticized the renaming, emphasizing that the "Gulf of Mexico" has long been internationally recognized.
She highlighted that under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a country's sovereignty extends only up to 12 nautical miles from its coastline, implying that the U.S. cannot unilaterally rename the entire Gulf.
