FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

Across the country, fire prevention week kicks off.

It's a time when normally fire departments across the country will be spreading the word on fire safety, whether that's at their departments or in schools.

But the pandemic has forced fire departments to use different ways.

Prevention week.

Local firefighters....as theylwaysdo,e pandemic has made that annual mission difficult.

So newschannel two's brent kearney stepped up to help get the message out.

The times may have changed but thier message stays the same.

Fire prevention week begins nationwide and this year's theme is cooking safety.

None "we seen since the beginning of the covid pandemic most people are staying home these days.

Their cooking more in the home and we've seen an increase during the time of the pandemic an increase in kitchen fires."

Captain puelio says there are common things that we do in the kitchen that could potentially start fires.

"if you're cooking in the kitchen make sure you stay in the kitchen and watch what you're cooking and not go do something else.

"now normally this time of year fire fighters are doing demonstrations in schools.

But unfortunately due to covid, that's not exactly possible," "i've been doing this for 16 year and i look forward every year to going into schools and doing our fire prevention play.

To not be able to do it this year, it's tough on all of the fire fighters that like to go our there and do it."

The department plans on sending informational videos to schools instead.

"we've branched out to media and we've branched out to the internet to still get the message out there."

But puelio hopes people will take it upon themselves to be safe.

"we just need to be cognizant of the safety within the home.

Safety with our children, making sure we're having lessons.

Making sure we're getting out of the house if their is a fire.

Making sure we're having lessons about cooking safety.

Talk to your kids about being safe in the home and being safe with any kind of fires."
