A man is dead after a fire in shuqualak late thursday night.

Calhoun says 63- year-old bloden murray was found in his house on college street after the fire.

Deputies believe the fire started because there was no electricity in the house and murray started a fire to stay warm.

His body was found friday morning and was sent to pearl for an autopsy.

Macon and shuqualak volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

Mississippi state department of health reports one thousand three hundred and seventy new cases of covid-19 with 21 new deaths.

There are 34 new cases among long term health care facilities.

691 are hospitalized with confirmed covid-19 symptoms. right now, more than one hundred and thirty-three thousand cases of covid-19 have been reported in 2020 with more than thirty five hundred deaths.

It's presumed that more than one hundred and eleven thousand people have recovered from the virus.

Governor tate reeves saying this week that mississippi would not participate in a nationwide lockdown if one was put in place.

Courtney ann jackson getting reaction to those comments.

Some of mississippi's congressional delegation is standing by governor tate reeves' position... "we're not going to participate in a nationwide lockdown."

Senator roger wicker saying he believes a nationwide mandatory lockdown would do more harm than good.

Senator cindy hyde-smith commenting that decisions such as shutdowns or mask mandates should be left to leaders at the state level.

And congressman michael guest echoing that "state-led responses work best".

So, what about the businesses the governor says couldn't survive another shutdown?

Glenda barner owns sugar's place in jackson.

"every day we come down here and open that door, we take a chance on getting covid-19."

They've moved to takeout and outdoor dining since reopening after the earlier shutdown.

But ultimately---she says she'll put health and safety over profits.

"if the time comes and it's the safety of my family over this restaurant, the restaurant is gone."

Campbell's bakery and campbell's craft donuts owner mitchell moore also has mixed emotions about the governor's comments.

"he's right on one hand.

The businesses won't survive.

We're barely surviving now.

Most people i know who are small business owners are really really struggling now."

But moore says if the state's not going to participate, he thinks there should broader actions taken.

"not having a statewide mask mandate is harmful."

He says they're prepared to make rollbacks on their own if the numbers keep rising.

"we push tables even further apart.

We clean even more often, that type of thing.

And so we're doing what we have to do and if numbers continue to rise lacking state action, we'll still take whatever action we need to protect our business and protect our customers."

Doctor, rn's and travel nurses are working long shifts to care for patients with the virus and symptoms. our stephanie poole speaks with two nurses about their experience during the pandemic.

"covid-19 is tricky and it changes minute by minute.

A patient can be in satisfactory condition doing pretty well.

An hour later they can go downhill very quickly."

Paige jorgensen is a respiratory therapist from new york.

She's currently working at dch regional medical center in tuscaloosa.

Jorgensen says it's considered a hot spot for coronavirus.

" i've seen many patients from 20 to 40 with no serious health conditions pass away from this disease.

So though it may not affect everyone drastically, the chance is still there."

One of the biggest misconceptions, jorgenson says, is just how seriousness it can be.

" the situation is quite grim when you see it rom the inside.

We're doing the best we can everyday with what we have working out hardest.

We're trying new things, trying things that have shown improvements for others.

" butt sots " we try to keep the doors closed at all times.

We limit our contact and we don't try to be in the room anymore than we have to.

We do basically bundle our care and get in and try to let the patient rest."

Jasmine thomas is a graduate of the mississippi university for women school of nursing.

She has worked in three different covid units since the pandemic began.

She's traveled from new jersey, new york, and is now stationed at main methodist hospital in san antonio, texas.

" here in bear county, we report numbers daily.

For yesterday, i can re-call there were 301 news cases reported.

In the county, we have over 69-thousand cases since this pandemic has started."

Jorgensen and thomas are treating nearly 18 covid patients and working 12 hours shifts.

They say hospitals are even switching up the way patients receive their treatment.

" the iv pumps,how the rn controls the medicine.

All that's outside the room now.

So we try to provide them with patient care as much as possible just without a-lot of contact."

Butt sots " you have to gown up.

Put all your ppe on.

Then you take it off, leave the room, and do it all over again so it can be very time consuming so we just try to stay on top on things as much as we can so we can try to conserve ppe."

Both agree, while the future of the coronavirus is unknown, it's following guidelines is the best way to tackle it.

" it's just a little nerve-wrecking to know, where is the end to of this?"

At this time, most traveling nurses are choosing to stay at their assigned hospital longer to lower the risk of transmission of the virus.

A boil water notice has been lifted for northern oktibbeha county.

Representatives from trim cane water association announced that repairs are complete.

The water has been tested and is now safe to consume.

The notice was issued earlier this week after a break in one of the main lines.

The city of columbus is looking a little cleaner today.

A group of 45 volunteers from the community gathered today for the second time this month to pick up litter.

The event was sponsored by the mayor's office and the code enforcement division.

In all, about 50 bags of trash were picked up along all wards... as well as more than 70 tires.

Today's pickup was from 9 am until noon.

"i can already tell you ward 3 looks pretty much amazing, the litter that we did, i think we got about 4 or 5 bags over there, but overall, i think we got a lot of volunteers to come out and help out all the wards.

I really appreciate it.

It went great... i encourage people just to get out in their neighborhoods, atleast once a week maybe, and pick up trash.

That would definitely make a difference."

The group plans to have 3 to 4 more garbage pickup days next year.

Intro over 200 tupelo area residents don't have to worry about buying a turkey for their families this thanksgiving, thanks to some generous folks.

Wcbi's chad groening has more.

The thanksgiving drive-thru turkey giveaway took place in front of city hall in fairpark...and cars were lined up all the way back to main street to get one.

The event was organized by a group of tupelo realtors and bank plus.

Marcus mccoy was one of the participants.

"people are really struggling right now.

Lots of people are out of work.

It's hard times right now.

You know this time of crisis is going on we figured it's better to give back to the community to help as many families as we can."

Janice scott says it is important for people to give back to the community.

"i believe if jesus was here he will be giving.

You know that is our nature.

That's who we are is to give back to the community.

We're here to serve others thats less fortunate or you know in time of need."

Turkeys weren't the only thing they were giving away, some fortunate individuals received cash in amounts of 100, 50 and 25 dollars.

Chip ashford works for bank plus.

"we try to be a big part in the community and when they came to me about possibly being a sponsor with it, it was a no brainer.

With the economy going as it is, giving back to the community is a big thing that we like to do at bank plus."

And those who received a turkey or money really have something to be thankful for this thanksgiving.

And they gave away all 205 turkeys in 45 minutes and plan to give away more next year.

Any rain will be rather brief and we aren't expecting rainfall amounts over a quarter of an inch.

More than likely, all rain will be gone by sunrise on sunday.

Sunday: we could see a lingering sprinkle or two after sunrise on sunday, but it looks like most of the day will be dry.

We'll start out with some morning clouds and end up sunny by the afternoon.

Highs will be in the mid to upper 60s.

Monday-friday: let's make it short, sweet, and to the point...all of next week will be spectacular.

You'll be hard pressed to find a single cloud in the sky from monday through friday.

Temperatures will be a bit cooler, but not much.

We're looking at highs in the mid 60s for the first half of the week and closer to 70 by thursday and friday.

Morning lows will be in the mid to upper 30s for monday, tuesday, and wednesday, and the low to mid 40s for thursday and friday.
